Long-distance footraces have a long and storied history in the United States. In addition to traditional road races, long-distance trail races are growing in popularity. Among trail races, the Dipsea is one of the most famous. Established in 1905, the Dipsea is the oldest continuously run American trail race. The course begins in Mill Valley, California, and ends in Stinson Beach, California, a scenic stretch of land that many trail-racing aficionados consider to be one of the most beautiful courses in the world. Its numerous stairs and steep trails also make it one of the most demanding and treacherous.

The Dipsea takes place annually on the second Sunday in June. Although safety and environmental concerns have caused race officials to limit the number of entries to roughly 1,500 runners, the race attracts runners from all over the world. In 2017, 46-year-old San Franciscan Chris Lundy crossed the finish line first to win the 107th Annual Dipsea.
